Local homeowner informationWhat Winter Haven homeowners should know about gutters

Winter Haven has some 50 lakes within or bordering the city. Two chains, the Northern and the Southern, are joined by canals, and the lakes sit at the top of the Peace River watershed.

Rain is the only thing that fills the lakes

The city's lakes report says no outside streams feed the lakes, so all of their water comes from rain. Lake levels and the ground around them follow the wet and dry seasons. After a stretch of heavy rain, soil near the shore is already full, and a downspout that dumps at the foundation has nowhere to soak in. The same report names stormwater from the land around the lakes as the main source of pollution. Clean gutters keep leaves and debris out of that runoff, and downspouts aimed at open lawn, not at the shoreline slope, give roof water a place to soak in before it reaches the lake.

Downtown's older drains and pavement

The city's report says older drainage and a lot of pavement are concentrated downtown, and the city modeled a 10-year storm of about 7 inches in 24 hours to find where streets and yards flood. With more pavement and older drains, runoff has fewer places to go. Send roof water to a lawn or planting bed on your own lot, not out to the curb. Buried drain lines are an option where the lot is tight.

Lakeshore homes with long histories

The report describes the Southern Chain as surrounded by long-standing developed land, and the first canals between its lakes were dug by hand in the early 1900s. The Census Bureau's 2020 to 2024 estimates put about 12 percent of Winter Haven homes as built before 1960 and about 43 percent since 2000. On older homes near the lakes, we start with the wood fascia and soffit, since boards softened by years of rain need repair before new gutters go up. On newer homes, the question is usually gutter size and downspout placement.

FAQsGutter questions from Winter Haven homeowners

Where should downspouts drain on a lakefront home?

Lakefront lots often slope toward the water. We aim downspouts at open yard well back from the shoreline, so water spreads and soaks in instead of running straight down the bank, and where it helps we add a buried drain line that discharges on your lot. If your community or the city has rules about changes near the shoreline, check them before work starts.

Do you replace gutters on older homes?

Yes. We start with the fascia and soffit, repair what is soft or damaged, and hang new seamless gutters on solid boards.

How much does gutter installation cost in Winter Haven?

The price depends on how many linear feet of gutter you need, the size and material, the number of corners and downspouts, how high the roof edge is, whether old gutters must be removed, and whether the fascia needs repair first. We give you a free written estimate after we see the home, so you know the number before any work starts. On older lakeshore homes, repairing soft fascia before the gutters go up is the most common add-on.
