Learn moreAuburndale sits between Lakeland and Winter Haven, with lakes throughout the city. Lake Ariana covers 1,030 acres, and Lake Stella is near the town center.
Lake Ariana's watershed covers about 4,766 acres, and about a quarter of the land is medium-density residential, according to a Florida DEP report. The lake drains by a short canal into Lake Lena, which flows toward Lake Hancock and the upper Peace River. Water from roofs and streets here ends up in the same lakes. The Southwest Florida Water Management District asks homeowners to clean yard waste out of gutters and away from storm drains, so leaves do not wash downstream. Regular gutter cleaning does that job for your roof.
The Census Bureau's 2020 to 2024 estimates put about 4 in 10 Auburndale homes as built since 2000, about a quarter between 1980 and 1999, and about 1 in 5 before 1960. That mix means very different roof edges. On a home from the 1980s or 1990s, the original gutters are now 25 to 45 years old. On a pre-1960 home, the wood fascia behind the gutters is the first thing to check. On newer homes the question is usually gutter size and where the downspouts go. We look at the fascia and hangers before we recommend a repair or a replacement.
The U.S. Geological Survey notes that summer thunderstorms in Polk County can drop several inches in one place and little or nothing a few miles away. Hurricane Ian showed it. Preliminary figures put Auburndale at about 2.4 inches and Lake Wales at nearly 17, though officials said the numbers could rise because power outages affected some gauges. Do not judge your gutters by one storm on your street. They have to handle the hardest downpours of the wet season, roughly June through September.
