Local homeowner informationWhat Lake Wales homeowners should know about gutters

Lake Wales sits on the Lake Wales Ridge, a sandy upland of deep, fast-draining sand, at about 128 feet. The ridge is also home to Mountain Lake, a community founded in 1915, and the Lake Wales Historic Residential District, listed on the National Register in 1997.

Fast-draining sand, but not immune

After Hurricane Ian in 2022, Lake Wales received nearly 17 inches of rain, the highest in Polk County. Sandy soil absorbs a lot, but it cannot absorb that much that fast. The city's own stormwater page says flat terrain and limited drainage systems can flood streets, yards and, occasionally, homes.

Wind as well as rain

Lake Wales had a 75 mph gust during Hurricane Charley in 2004 and hurricane-force winds from Charley, Frances and Jeanne within 44 days, then again in Irma in 2017. Gutters and fascia that are loose fail first. We fasten gutters to solid boards, and we replace fascia that is soft.

Historic homes and large lots

Mountain Lake has large lots, with mostly Mission and Colonial Revival homes, and Lake Wales Historic Residential District has more than 200 historic buildings. Older eaves often need work before new gutters go up. If your home is in a historic district, check whether exterior changes need approval.

FAQsGutter questions from Lake Wales homeowners

My home is in a historic district. Can you work on it?

Yes. We look at the eave and recommend a style that fits, such as half-round or copper. Check with the city or your association first about any approvals.

Will gutters help in a storm like Ian?

They help move roof water away from the house, but heavy rain at that level can overwhelm a yard no matter what. Properly sized gutters and downspouts, and good grading, give your home the best chance.

How much does gutter installation cost in Lake Wales?

The price depends on how many linear feet of gutter you need, the size and material, the number of corners and downspouts, how high the roof edge is, whether old gutters must be removed, and whether the fascia needs repair first. We give you a free written estimate after we see the home, so you know the number before any work starts. Older Lake Wales homes often need soft fascia replaced first, and that is the most common add-on.
