Learn moreMelbourne runs from the Indian River Lagoon west toward the St. Johns marsh, with the older Eau Gallie area near the water and newer subdivisions inland.
NWS Melbourne's rainfall records from a north Melbourne station show a wet season of about 138 days that brings 64 percent of the year's rain, with about 14 days a year of an inch or more and about 4 days over 2 inches. The typical dry season start is mid-October, so late October is a good time to clear a summer's worth of leaves and shingle grit. See the NWS wet and dry season page.
The city says runoff moves through ditches and storm drains that ultimately lead into the Indian River Lagoon, and that stormwater fees help fund its lagoon nutrient plan. Keep grass clippings and yard debris out of the street and drains, and aim downspouts onto lawn or planted areas instead of bare soil or the road. The city's stormwater hotline is 321-608-7341.
Eau Gallie has a small city-designated historic district of mostly frame vernacular homes from roughly 1900 to the 1950s, with design guidelines for exterior work. If you are in or near it, ask the city before changing exteriors. On any older home we look at the fascia first, since boards that have weathered for decades often need repair before new gutters go on.
